Similar Species The African Wild Ass (Equus asinus), the ancestor of
the widely distributed domestic donkey, once inhabited parts of Arabia
(although probably not after the Neolithic period). However, other
than in its domestic form it no longer occurs in the region. It survives
only in very small numbers in a limited area in the Horn of Africa.
