and Zagros mountain ranges. The species is similarly scattered across
Turkey in mountainous and forested areas. In both these countries the
numbers of bears have been greatly reduced. Brown Bears were said
to have survived in the Atlas ranges of North Africa until about the
middle of the 19th century. Little is known of this extinct population



  • it is possible that animals noted in historical times were introduced,
    although they are known there from the recent fossil record.

ASIATIC BLACK BEAR Ursus thibetanus


Identification Smaller than the Brown Bear, as its name implies the
Asiatic Black Bear has a glossy black coat, a brown muzzle and a white
or yellowish, V-shaped patch on the chest.


Size Shoulder height 70–80 cm.
Weight 6 5 –150 k g.
