REASONS TO
TRAVEL THIS WINTER
No. 1 A Journey to Siberia’s Frozen Lake
The planet’s deepest lake, Baikal, freezes over in winter and gets covered with
an ice sheet so thick that one can drive a truck over it. Skirt on the shores of the
frozen lake on the legendary Circum Baikal Railway, and board a hovercraft to
join the locals in ice-fishing, dog-sledding, and snowmobiling. The ice here is
quite transparent, making it a delight for Instagram-savvy travellers. On a
15-day journey aboard the private trans-Siberian train, The Golden Eagle,
travellers can also experience the charm of Russia’s nail-bitingly cold winters
with sleigh rides in UNESCO-listed Vladimir, vodka and caviar sampling, baths
in a Russian banya (sauna), etc. US-based Mir Corporation runs a tour in
February that starts at Moscow and culminates in Vladivostok. mircorp.com
