interacted respectfully and,
on the whole successfully,
with Māori.
Of course, fascinating
discoveries are still being
made about this land’s
history, but in using the
resources and knowledge
at his disposal at the
time, Cook’s visits were a
sensational step forward for
naval exploration.

CALLING COLUMNIST OUT
Paul Thomas (Sport,
September 29) nicely bal-
ances the arguments in his
analysis of Serena Williams’
US Open outburst, and
then says it’s umpire Carlos
Ramos’ fault because he
lacked “empathy”.
In my view, Williams was
rude and her calling Ramos
a thief translates to saying
he was dishonest. Even a
great champion (though
now permanently tainted)
should not be able to call
an umpire dishonest and
get away with it.
Christopher Johnstone
(Grey Lynn, Auckland)
Paul Thomas writes that
“the difficult part” of the
chair umpire’s job “is man-
aging the contest” and that
Carlos Ramos made a mess
of it. I can find no reference
in the International Tennis
Federation’s “Duties and
Procedures for Officials” to
this requirement, so Ramos
can’t be faulted for not
fulfilling it.

PROSTATE OUTRAGE
Dr AJF Ross perpetuates the
discouragement of men to
get screening for prostate
cancer (Letters, October 6),
disingenuously saying “first
do no harm”.
Would he say the same
thing to an overweight
woman with large breasts?
They are also difficult to
screen for breast cancer.
He’d be crucified if he did.
