he genius of pioneer inventors can confound us. Countless

contraptions that revolutionized farming in the 19th and

early 20th centuries have become contemporary curiosities,

or even mysteries. Here are six sent in by readers. Do you

know what they are? Answers to the November 2018 items will

appear in the January 2019 issue.

A. Outside measures 2 inches by 2 inches. Inside

opening measures 1 inch by 1 inch; about 3/16-

inch thick.

B. The tool has a wooden handle, steel shaft and cast

iron disc at the end. Overall length: 17 inches.

Surface of the cast iron disc is ground and polished.

C. The tool has a wooden handle, steel shaft and steel

“finger” at the end. The finger is polished from use.

Overall length: 10 inches. No markings.

D. Measures about 14 inches in length. Two wooden

handles that, when closed, slide a small curved blade

(replaceable) into a semicircular slit in the triangular-

shape metal plate. No markings.

E. No description provided.

F. Found in a field. It has a “D” and four numbers on it.
