Will ie Soh (45),
IT professional
While posted in Oman to help set
up our branch office in Muscat, one
morning I noticed a painless lump on the left side of
my neck. A local doctor gave me antibiotics. On a trip
back home, I consulted my GP for a second opinion,
as I am more confident of the medical service here
in Singapore.
My GP referred me to an ENT specialist.
A scope showed a small lump at
the back of my nose, which
biopsy confirmed as Stage 2
nasopharynx cancer. I stayed
calm, asked about my options
and made an informed decision
on the spot. The medical
oncologist did a blood test and
PET-CT scan, and I booked my
radiation treatments.
I was lucky to have the strong
support and encouragement of
my company bosses to focus on my
medical treatments. I also found that
talking openly with caregivers, fellow
patients, nurses and doctors helped purge
any negative thoughts; I also feel that it helped
minimise the side effects of treatment.
At the end of the 33 sessions of radiation and six
cycles of chemo treatments, I “graduated” on 29 April
- Since then, I’ve maintained a proper diet and
started to play sports, and I focus on healthy living.
Also, I started to share my own experience with new
patients and caregivers, as well as volunteering my
time to the Children’s Cancer Foundation.
To date, three years after my last treatment, I have
a far more positive perspective on life. I am healthier,
happier and continue to be a strong and positive
warrior.
My Top 3 Tips:
#1 Ask others who have
gone through a similar
experience so that you
know how to prepare
yourself and what to
expect during and after
each treatment.
#2 Remember that you
are not fighting this battle
alone – share your feelings
with others.
#3 Stay positive!
