246 CITY GUIDE 2018

LET’S EAT

Shahi Maharani
Tucked away in a corner of Raffles City
Shopping Centre, this long-standing
North Indian restaurant offers a grand
and exclusive setting for occasions of
all sorts – birthdays, family dinners and
more. First established in 1997, and in
Raffles City from 2001, Shahi Maharani
has retained its traditional flair through
the years, and this makes up a big part of
its charm. With regal wood-focused décor
reminiscent of the royal palaces of India,
it’s recognised as one of the prominent
Indian restaurants in Singapore,
Fans of tandoori dishes can tuck into a
savoury selection of vegetarian and meaty
options cooked in a traditional clay oven
(tandoor), including the chicken shashlik
($31): chunks of freshly grilled, yogurt-

marinated chicken and assorted vegetables, served piping
hot on a sizzling plate. If you’re big on seafood, you’ll love
the prawn korma ($36) – a sinful blend of cashew nuts,
crushed cottage cheese, spices and succulent prawns. Pile
this creamy concoction on top of fragrant saffron rice ($11)
and enjoy!

Tatsu
Located within the iconic walls of Chijmes, Tatsu started
over 20 years ago as one of the pioneers of Japanese fine
dining in Singapore. This popular sushi resto has since
added a teppanyaki counter to its space, and opened
a second outlet in the buzzy business
district, in Asia Square.
Specialties include teppanyaki
flambé wagyu beef ($168), wagyu
ox tongue ($32) and live lobster in

Tatsu’s special sauce. The teppanyaki
counter provides each diner with direct
access to the chefs, allowing you to
experience the theatre that unfolds as they
prepare your meal. To kick things off in
a style true to Japanese restaurants, start
with an omakase (“chef’s choice”) sashimi
selection ($40 per person). Not a fan of
raw seafood? Try the unagi avocado maki
($18) to share. Beautifully presented,
the combination of eel, fresh avo and
fish roe is a palate pleaser. There are also
affordable bento lunch sets (priced from
$25) and teppanyaki dinner course sets
(priced from $68) available on the menu.
