Expat Living City Guide – June 2018

Neighbourhood: Bishan
I live in a four-room HDB flat in
Bishan Street 22, a couple of blocks
from Bishan Park. I’ve lived here for more than ten
years; previously, I was in a Bukit Timah condo.

Reasons for living here: I love that the park is
just a short one-minute walk from my place. It’s
so convenient to head down for a jog after work
or during the weekends. There’s also a 24-hour
coffee shop ten minutes away, at BLK 284, with
the best kway chap (a Teochew dish of flat, broad
rice sheets in a soup made with dark soy sauce)
I’ve ever tried, as well as pretty decent chicken
rice, dumplings and minced meat noodles. For
groceries, there are two main supermarkets – Ang
Mo supermarket and NTUC FairPrice – near the
coffee shop, so you can easily get what you need
within the area.

Public transport: Bishan is an excellent
location in terms of it being central – it’s
a mere ten-minute train ride to Orchard,
and the Circle Line makes the west and
east easily accessible, too.

Best green space: Bishan Park, hands
down!

Local amenities: There are a couple of
dental clinics, around five GPs as well as
plenty of salons and bakeries. I’ve also
spotted a couple of foot reflexology centres
and nail salons.

Local recommendations: The BLK 284
coffee shop has a dessert stall selling cheap
and good local desserts like ice kachang
and chendol – a must try!
