Expat Living City Guide – June 2018

Neighbourhood: Seletar Air Base
I’ve lived in Seletar, in Singapore’s
northeast, on and off since 2004.

Reasons for living here: There’s garden space
for the dogs, you get more for your money, it has
a proper neighbourhood feel, and a great mix of
nationalities. It’s also right next to the CTE and is
close to the Australian International School, which
was very useful when the kids still went there.

Public transport: The bus stop is a three-minute
walk from home and then takes you to Nex at
Serangoon, or Yio Chu Kang MRT. Sengkang MRT
isn’t too far away too, and there’s an LRT within a
fifteen-minute walk of the house. It’s a long drive
in rush hour, though, and when you’re coming
home at night; but I think the lower rents and
extra space balance this out.

Best green space: Sengkang Park, or the walk
all the way to Punggol – but we often still do the
MacRitchie TreeTop Walk.

Local amenities: There’s a local sports centre
with a gym and pool, Jalan Kayu has a mix of
affordable restaurants, and the new Seletar Mall
and Greenwich Village both have all the basics.

Local recommendations: Youngs, The
Summerhouse and Wheeler’s Estate restaurants
at The Oval on the base are all nice for days or
evenings, and often have live music too. Jalan
Kayu was famous for its roti prata places, but I’m
not sure if they’re as good as they used to be. There
are also some great plane and private jet spotting
areas around the base at Seletar Airport.
