Citigroup
Partnership on securities lending in Korea

CITIGROUP has partnered with the KOREA
SECURITIES DEPOSITORY, South Korea’s central
securities depository, to provide securities
lending services.
The US bank said in a statement that it would
work with Korean securities companies, fund

managers, and other financial intermediaries on
lending their global equity portfolios to generate
higher returns on idle assets.
Citigroup said it would start working with
local brokerage firm SHINHAN INVESTMENT and
planned to expand to cover other clients with
the possibility of also extending cover to other
financial assets beyond equities later.
According to data from the World Bank cited by
Citigroup, local Korean investors currently hold
around US$570bn in global equities via direct
and portfolio investments.
