IndustrialRevolutionand InventivePeriod“echoedthe viewsof thosecriticsof German

increasedrelianceon commerceand manufacturingthroughfreertrade.... He deplored

AndifMeinKampfcouldidentifyone especialgeographiclocusof Jewishcapitalist

UnitedStatesfor beingwhathe called“a decayedcountry,withproblemsof raceand
socialinequality.. .” He sawit as a place“whereeverythingis builton the dollar.. .”^11
“Whatis America” he raged,“but millionaires,beautyqueens,stupidrecordsand Holly-
wood?” Nothing,he believed,sincethe countryhas longbeenafflictedby “the most
graspingmaterialism.”^12 The Nazis’ collaboratorsin Franceconcurred,mouthingthat the
USAwasa nationof monopoliesand“gangsterism,” andthateveryAmericanis a “vile
profiteerwhoonlyrespectsmoney.”^13
In yet anotherdiscussionwithWagener,the Führerwenton that the U.S.is a hotbedof
licentiousness.Suchdepravity,Hitlermaintained,resultedfromJewish industrialists
havingascendedto sucha highpositionin our nation,andthe influencethe USApro-
