translations. My deep appreciation goes to my intellectual companions Darcy
Buerkle, Eric Kligerman, Dan Magillow, and Anna Parkinson. David Bathrick’s
virtuosity in the genre of conversation is a keen pleasure and rich source of
ideas, and his faith in my work has been an enormous support. My gratitude to
John Wright and Phoebe Varinia DeMund for their enduring friendship grows
with the years.
I am fortunate to have a warm, supportive, and infinitely interesting family in
the United States and Europe. On the European side, special thanks go to Jas-
par Jansen, a cousin who is more like my brother. My affectionate appreciation
goes also to Boukje van Tulder, Ellis Galesloot, and Ton Lakeman. My warm
gratitude goes as well to Birgit and Rune Palm, my aunt and uncle, and Håkan
and Maria Palm, my cousins.
Stateside, special thanks go to my sister, Marta; my sister-in-law, Julie Steiner;
and Trixie and Micah, my niece and nephew. The love, work ethic, and sensitiv-
ity to the challenges of academic research of my father, Jim, have sustained this
project at every stage. I also thank his partner, Anne Bower, for her kindness and
support. I am grateful to my mother-in-law, Athene Goldstein, for her generosity,
intelligence, and patient belief in me and this project, so long in the making. The
memory of two people who inspired my intellectual and human Bildung infuses
the pages of this book: my almost uncannily insightful and infinitely kind father-
in-law, Marvin Goldstein; and my mother, Beatrix Bloem Rose, who—with her
huge heart, irreverence, and passion for ideas—continues to be my guiding star.
My sweet, funny, boundlessly curious and energetic, och ibland mer än lovligt
busiga sons, Asher and Noam, brighten every day of my life. They have followed
the ups and downs of my progress on this project, probably more closely than
they should have had to. It is a pleasure at last to be able to answer their re-
current, exasperated questions as to whether this book would ever be finished.
Claire, my companion and constant and favorite interlocutor, has heard and
read (and reread) the arguments in this book at every stage and has done more
than any other person to make them better. I dedicate the book with all my love
to Claire, Asher, and Noam.
