GENERAL PC

Return shortcuts
There are threewaysto use the Enter
key – by pressing Enter on itsown,
Shift+Enter or Ctrl+Enter – each of which
performs a different action depending on
the software thattext is being typed into,
such as onlineforms, website comments,
social media sites and so on. In most
word processors, such as MicrosoftWord
or theWord web app (bit.ly/word484),
pressing Enter on itsown begins a new
paragraph, while Shift+Enterstarts a new
line –you can see the difference in the
line spacing. Ctrl+Enter is usedto start a
new page: inWord, --- Page Break --- is
inserted, which is usefulfor new sections
or chapters in a document.When

printed,Page Breakstarts a new page.
On Facebook (and some other sites),
Enter postsyour comment, while
Shift+Enter juststarts a new line.

StopWindows updates
You can’tstop Windows updates forever
but there’s atemporary method that
works on laptops. Unplug the laptop so
it’s running on battery power, then click
the battery icon in the taskbar and drag
the slider all theway to the leftfor
battery saving. Also, open theAction
Centre panelby clicking the rightmost
icon in the taskbar and turn on the
Battery Saver. While running a laptop on
the battery and in battery-saving mode,
Windows update is turned off.The
battery will last longer,too.

BLUNDER OF THE FORTNIGHT

Have you managedto fix a PC-related disaster?
If so, please sendyour [email protected]

While recording my family tree in
MicrosoftWord, I assigned a different
colour to each generation. This
entailedconstant use of thefont
colour icon, whichwas a bit of a pain,
especially as I hadto keep dipping into
‘morecolours’. Setting up a shortcut
for eachcolour made life much easier.
To do this inWord, click File,
Options, Customize Ribbon. In the
pop-up, select‘All commands’ in the
left column andColour in the right.
Choose acolour and click Apply.This
method can also be used withfonts.
I use Ctrl+Alt+any letterfor each
colour (such as ‘b’for black,‘g’ for
green and so on).This setupworks
well if you ha ve to regularlyswitch to
