LIVING ITALIA!

structure, or prefer simply to use a
finished home immediately. Puglia
offers lots of choice for every preference

  • with new builds, building plots,
    ready-restored and tumbledown
    restoration projects all abundantly
available. Note that the region also
    offers lots of particularly high-quality
    building expertise and wonderful
    craftspeople able to produce beautiful
results on any restored or bespoke
    property. Building standards are very
    high down here.

As for which route – buying a
home that needs building work or
one which doesn’t – will ultimately
prove to be the most economical, the
jury is still out. Some agents advise
that in the current market it’s best to
buy a ready-to-move-into property
or one which only needs a tiny bit of
renovation rather than to invest in
a more involved restoration project.
But other agents still recommend
restoring as a great route to get
the home of your dreams, and also
sing the praises of buying land and
building from scratch according to
your own design.
As suggested earlier, the high
quality of building work in Puglia

is beyond dispute, but restorers
and self-builders would do well to
prepare themselves for things to
take time. This is southern Italy,
and its slower pace of life is one of
the things we love about the place.
However, we may not love that
so quite much when it comes to
bureaucracy and building schedules.
Take heart, though, from the great
number of people who have done
restoration projects in Puglia. If
they’ve all done it, then so can you.

Delays and bureaucracy clearly
weren’t so bad that it stopped them
or ultimately deterred others. Find
yourself a good estate agent who has
connections with local builders and
can navigate all the red tape for you.
Very many can speak English, act as
project managers, and offer a variety
of useful services as the home of your
dreams take shape.
