Here are a few inter views with experts at the
HVACR Expo at The Big 5:

Omar Abdelaziz
ASHRAE Global Training Center instructor

What is your take on the new and upcoming
HVACR Expo?
It brings a much-needed exposure of the
GCC HVACR industr y to the state-of-the-art,
provides an opportunity to learn about the
newest commercial HVAC product offering
for the GCC market with special emphasis
on hot climate conditions, as well as provides
an opportunity for free-learning
opportunities.

Describe some challenges in the GCC HVACR
market and the opportunities they present.
Some of the challenges in the GCC HVAC
R market are the high ambient conditions,

high humidity, and different equipment use
profi le. Opportunities come from large mar-
ket potential, especially within growing mar-
kets. Finally, the GCC market has been part
of the Kigali amendment exception which
allows for a better transition towards lower
global warming potential refrigerants.

According to you which are the top HVAC proj-
ects to look out for in the GCC?
I am ver y interested to see NEOM since
they have plans for strong renewable energy
integration and the use of advanced HVAC
products.

Name one thing about HVACR that people al-
ways get wrong.
People think that hydrofl uorocarbon (HFC)
refrigerants can’t be used in the GCC market
and that they won’t be able to match the cur-
rent effi ciency of the hydrochlorofl uorocarbon
(HCFC) refrigerants. Experience has proven

this wrong!

Dr. Omar Abdelaziz is the instructor at Global
Training Centre ASHRAE and he is going to
share his expertise at the HVAC R Talks on
“New Developments in Lower GWP Refriger-
ants (MENA)”.

Faisal Rashid, Director, Demand Side Man-
agement Supreme Council of Energy

Why is HVACR coming into the spotlight in the
GCC?
Due to the harsh nature or hot climate in the
GCC, it is logical to assume that HVAC & R
accounts for heavy consumption of energy
and it can yield to the greatest saving poten-
tial of any sector of the economy.

Describe some challenges in the GCC HVACR
market and the opportunities they present.
HVACR in general has no market barriers
as technologies, ser vices and products are
already available in the GCC market at large
but HVACR conversely accounts for heavy
usage of energy whether in buildings or
industries, it basically represents 70% of the
total energy consumption of a building on
average, it usually puts pressure on energy
generation systems, energy needs, trans-
lating this into environmental impact and
fi nances in terms of fuel supply and required
capacities for electricity generation units.

Name one thing about HVACR that people al-
ways get wrong.
The consumption factor and high share
HVACR in overall energy consumption and
green house gas emissions are not known to
many consumers.

Faisal Rashid is the Director of Demand Side
Management Supreme Council of Energy and
his topic at the HVACR Talks is “Importance
of district cooling in demand side management
landscape of Dubai”.
