John Duncan Fergusson probably painted this picture between 1904 and 1905, based on his
setting: the terrace of the old Château Daloz, incorporated into the Hotel Hermitage (now
the Casino de la Fôret) around 1904. Some of the Fergusson’s earliest works feature café
society, and following Whistler’s example, often focused on capturing atmospheric effects,
particularly how the shift from daylight to electricity influenced human behavior.
