1 KATY PERRY AS A CHANDELIER
AT THE MET BALL ...
Katy and I have worked together on so much.
She’s such a willing participant and a great
friend. I’m sure there is no one else on the
planet I could propose a chandelier dress to
who would have said yes. It was the 2019 ball,
and it weighed a ton. We had to dress her in
the back of a dirty truck with the NYC police
honking their horns loudly beside us. When
we got to the door of the Met there was half
an inch spare on either side — just enough to
get through. Then we put her headdress on in
front of everyone and she walked effortlessly
up the stairs and did the red carpet. No other
human could do that.
... AND LATER ON AS A BURGER
When we were working out ideas for Katy’s
Met Ball look, I showed her the burger and
chandelier as options. In the beginning
she was hungry for the burger to be the
red-carpet look, but I pushed the chandelier.
Orlando [Bloom, her fiancé] did too. It
worked out so perfectly. She changed into
the burger, which was actually a cape and
lettuce dress, because it allowed her to sit
down for dinner. We threw an afterparty that
night where she looked up at me and said:
“This is my favourite outfit I’ve worn in my
entire life.” It’s one of my fondest memories.
2 MAKING MAGIC WITH BJöRK
This dress is based on the white-winged
look that featured in my third collection —
an all-white show. Back in 1998 Björk asked
if I’d do something similar for her — I did a
version with sleeves for her Homogenic tour.
I’d been to see her during her time with the
Sugarcubes and couldn’t believe what I was
hearing when she called. She has been a
friend ever since.
3 MY SUPER-SURREAL
PICASSO DRESS
For this collection I had been thinking
about Picasso and why he’s such an icon.
I was also thinking about how he did a
version of the old masters. It was about
mixing different moods and ideas. Kaia
Gerber, who is wearing the dress here (left),
incidentally, is a big Picasso fan and has a
Picasso tattoo. It all worked perfectly.
4 STATEMENT SNEAKERS (WITH WINGS)
JS Wings, my 2008 collaboration with
Adidas, is quite literally when I got my
wings, and the project brought a new
audience to my brand — especially
sneakerheads, who didn’t know
me as a high-fashion designer.
