120 FRED AND PETER DONE
£1.476bn £241m ▲
Gambling: Betfred

The Done brothers part-funded their first betting shop with a
winning wager on England to seize the 1966 World Cup. Fred, 79,
runs Warrington-based Betfred’s 1,600 outlets. Peter, 75, looks after
the human resources outfit Peninsula. Profits at its Manchester-based
parent company Rainy City Investments grew by about a quarter to
£51.4 million in 2020-21 and it paid out £42 million to the Dones.
Disruption to the sporting calendar cut Betfred’s earnings during the
pandemic but there was a £97.7 million tax win over VAT on fixed-
odds betting machines from 2005 to 2013. 2021: £1.235bn, 137

127 DENIS SVERDLOV

Electric vehicles: Arrival

“I’m strongly against war,” Sverdlov, 43, assured investors in March
after the invasion of Ukraine. Briefly a deputy communications
minister in Vladimir Putin’s government, he and his family left Russia
in 2013, when he cut ties to the regime. Georgia-born Sverdlov is
a teetotal vegan and yoga fan who banked about £370 million in
2012 from the sale of his mobile phone firm Yota. His 2015 electric
vehicles start-up Arrival makes eco-friendly buses in Oxfordshire
and its purpose-built Uber car is coming out in the autumn. Last
year Arrival floated on the New York stock market but its £10 billion
valuation fell to below £1.7 billion. Sverdlov’s 76.43 per cent stake,
owned offshore via Kinetik, has dropped to £1.297 billion. We add
£100 million for other wealth. 2021: £6.173bn, 26

128 YAN HUO
£1.367bn £619m ▲
Hedge fund

Huo, 53, the son and grandson of physicists, swerved a scientific
path for finance. He began at JP Morgan and in 2005 co-founded
the £2.33 billion London hedge fund Capula Investment
Management, which operates in Hong Kong, Tokyo, Singapore and
the US. Huo owns at least half and, given Capula’s £148.8 million
profits, will have received £65.1 million last year. Past payouts add
£200 million. Under the Giving Pledge, Huo and his wife, Xue Fang,
have promised to donate most of their wealth. During the pandemic
their £100 million foundation gave £3 million to Covid-19 research
and £1 million to London’s performing arts. 2021: £748m, 217

132 STEPHEN FITZPATRICK
£1.34bn £665m ▲
Transport and energy

Fitzpatrick, 44, has floated his flying taxi venture Vertical Aerospace
on the New York stock market, yet he may have to wait years before
the VX4 electric four-seater aircraft is cleared to fly over cities.
His 65 per cent stake in the Bristol-based enterprise is now worth
£731.9 million, although the shares have lost altitude in recent
months. Meanwhile, his renewables supplier Ovo Energy, also based
in Bristol, has been zapped by rising costs. In January Ovo’s email to
its five million customers advising them to cuddle a pet or perform
star jumps to lower heating costs was not warmly received. The
company then announced plans to lay off 1,700 staff, a quarter of
the workforce. We cut the value of Ovo by £100 million to £900
million, estimating Belfast-born Fitzpatrick’s stake at £603 million.
