Rich List 2022 Billionaires
Donald Trump has found Baturina, 59, a
useful weapon in his campaign to discredit
his successor in the White House. He has
suggested that a $3.5 million “consultancy”
payment from Baturina, the widow of a
former mayor of Moscow, to a company
linked to President Biden’s son Hunter
might have muted the US response to
Russia’s attack on Ukraine. Lawyers for
Hunter Biden deny that he co-founded or
owned the firm in question.
London-based Baturina became
Russia’s richest woman by building a
fortune from property and cement from
1992 to 2010, when her husband Yuri
Luzhkov was in office. A “working-class
girl” whose first shifts were in a factory, she
had amassed £2.6 billion by 2008 until the
Russian state confiscated some of her
assets. Since selling her two main
businesses for more than £1.25 billion in
2011 she has invested heavily in hotels. She
paid €22 million for the Morrison in Dublin
in 2012 and another €10 million on
renovations. She has also invested in
southern European solar energy and
property including Beaurepaire Park in
Hampshire plus homes in Moscow,
London, Spain and Austria. She is a leading
collector of handmade Imperial Porcelain
and her Be Open foundation supports
young creatives. 2021: £1.133bn, 153

Shvidler, an old mate of Roman Abramovich (qv), is “hoping and
praying for peace” in Ukraine, a spokesman said. It did not stop the
British citizen being added to the UK sanctions list. Two of his private
jets, together worth $58 million, are grounded and his £197.7 million
stake in Evraz, the London-listed steel group, is frozen, but they still
count in his valuation. Moscow-born Shvidler, 58, made £6.6 billion
with Abramovich selling the Russian oil company Sibneft via
Millhouse Capital in 2005. He advised on the purchase of Chelsea
Football Club and in 2006 Abramovich gave him the 370ft yacht
Le Grand Bleu. Shvidler has a house in Surrey and is thought to have
sold a £22 million London mansion.
