McCartney will become Glastonbury’s oldest headliner
a week after his 80th birthday next month. Everybody's
favourite Beatle is barely slowing down, midway through
his Got Back tour of America. McCartney III, released in
late 2020, was his 18th solo album.
Apple Corps, set up in the 1960s to manage the Beatles’
earnings, continues to deliver millions of pounds a year in
dividends to McCartney, Ringo Starr (qv) and the heirs of
John Lennon and George Harrison. However, McCartney’s
wealth is far greater because of his larger share of songwriting
royalties and his music publisher MPL. The spike in the value
of song rights partly explains why our music expert increases
his estimate of McCartney’s wealth by £50 million this year.
From this rise we deduct a £5 million loss on a New York
penthouse. Macca and Nancy Shevell, 62, his American wife,
paid £11 million for the glass-fronted 5th Avenue address in
2015, offloading it for £6 million earlier this year. Shevell
brings £50 million to the partnership from her years working
with her late father, Myron — known as Mike — at the now
defunct New England Motor Freight Company.
When not on the road, McCartney spends time at his
160-acre farm near Rye, in East Sussex, where he has begun
to grow hemp alongside wheat and peas. 2021: £820m, 196=

Inheritance

The prince and princess were adopted in the 1960s from a London
orphanage by British-born Orietta Doria Pamphilj-Landi and her
husband, Frank Pogson, a naval officer. Pogson died in 1998, his wife
two years later. Their two heirs inherited the 1,000-room Palazzo
Doria Pamphilj in Rome, near the similarly palatial Villa Doria Pamphilj.
They were also bequeathed another palace in Genoa and one of the
greatest art collections in private hands, which includes some 650
works by Caravaggio, Titian, Raphael and Rubens. On the open
market the estate and art would be worth several billion pounds but
its value falls sharply as the art cannot be broken up or leave Italy.
The siblings’ relationship has been stormy. In 2009 Princess Gesine
challenged whether the two children her gay brother Jonathan
adopted with his partner could ultimately inherit. A judge in Rome
refused to hear the case and she dropped her legal action. The palace
is now held in a trust. Princess Gesine has recently bemoaned the
run-down state of the Villa Doria Pamphilj grounds, where they played
as children. It has been a public park since 1973. 2021: £775m, 209=
