THE YOUNG RICH LIST:

100 NAMES TO WATCH

Scrabbling for her lost AirPods in the changing
rooms at the US Open, the tennis ace Emma
Raducanu promised herself that if she won her
first-round qualifier she could buy herself some
more. It worked. A fortnight later she became
the youngest Briton to win a grand slam title and
the first British woman to accomplish the feat
since Virginia Wade in 1977. The £1.81 million prize
money was enough for 16,700 pairs of AirPods.
Raducanu’s fairytale straight-sets victory at
Flushing Meadows in New York in September
turned the teenager — then aged 18 — into a
household name. Within days she was off to the
Met Gala in Manhattan, decked out in Chanel.
Before the year was out she had been named
the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year and an
MBE followed in the new year’s honours list.
The sport’s new poster girl has had no trouble
monetising her success on court. Deals with the GETTY IMAGES, MEGA AGENCY

Music

Glasgow-born Capaldi, 25, sold out his first UK tour before
releasing his debut album. He put it down to “raw sex appeal”,
turning self-mockery into an art form in the same vein as the
album title, Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent — which in
2019 became the bestselling British debut record in five years.
Capaldi was still unsigned when he had a surprise hit on Spotify
with Bruises in 2017. He has more than 21.5 million monthly
listeners on the platform and by last year Someone You Loved
had been streamed 2.2 billion times. 2021: £17m, 48=

Tennis

jewellery brand Tiffany and the fashion label
Dior are each understood to be worth about
£2 million and she is also paid to be a brand
ambassador for British Airways, Evian and
Vodafone. The player, who grew up in Bromley,
south London, already had £100,000
sponsorship deals with Wilson and Nike,
which could be increased tenfold in light of
her elevation to the sport’s top level.
Born in Toronto, Raducanu was able to thank
her fans in China in fluent Mandarin — taught
to her by her Chinese mother, Renee — and
also speaks her father Ian’s tongue, Romanian.
But her Italian isn’t up to much: this month she
accidentally swore on TV before the Italian
Open in Rome, borrowing words that a friend
had mischievously taught her.
Raducanu moved to Britain aged two and
began playing tennis at five, ultimately focusing
on the sport over competing interests such as
basketball, golf, karting, horse riding and ballet.
She turned professional at 16, completing her
A-levels last year just months before her
tournament triumph.
Since then, however, she has given fans less
to cheer about on court. She is on the hunt for
her fourth new coach in a year — releasing the
latest, Torben Beltz, after just five months —
and has been plagued by a back injury.
Some have suggested that commercial deals
have led the 19-year-old to take her eye off the
ball. Her answer came in a Nike advert earlier this
year in which she was seen practising furiously,
ignoring flashing words such as “distracted”,
“fluke” and “one-hit wonder”. Progress, said the
sportswear giant, “comes one point at a time”.
