Return to the ballot
box
With only a few weeks to go before the American
midterm elections (6 November) tensions are
rising. This vote is to elect all seats in the House
of Representatives and one third in the Senate.
And, unlike previous midterms, this one has
been in preparation for a long time. The reason...
Donald Trump, whose presidency has divided
the country and unleashed an unprecedented
fever of political activism. If the Democrats man-
age to take over the House of Representatives, as
many polls indicate they could, Trump’s agenda
will be compromised, and maybe even steps to
impeachment taken. This election is clearly a
referendum of the Trump presidency.
With this in mind, the campaign budgets, as
of mid July, have already surpassed former
midterm elections, with political parties spend-
ing over a billion dollars on TV advertising
alone. Former president, Barack Obama, has left
retirement to campaign for the Democrats. After
lending his support to 81 candidates this sum-
mer, he gave speeches vigorously denouncing
Trump’s policies in September. This is a battle
of two very different kinds of presidency, and
ideologies, symbolised by Trump and Obama,
in these elections.
