THE REJECTION OF THERESA MAY’S
CHEQUERS PLAN
This photograph depicts Sebastian Kurz, Chancellor of Austria, and Theresa
May, British Prime Minister, during the informal EU summit in Salzburg, Austria,
on the 19th and 20th of September. Brexit was one of the main topics
discussed. While Theresa May hoped to soften the EU leaders on her Chequers
plan ahead of the 17-18 October EU summit (the date originally set as a
deadline for any withdrawal agreement), Donald Tusk stated at the closing
press conference that all 27 EU leaders agreed Theresa May’s Chequers plan could not work, namely because it cherry-
picked the single market. Several British newspapers wrote that this was a “humiliation” for the British Prime Minister.
