MORE THAN 22,000 PEOPLE, including primary school children,
have written to First Minister Nicola Sturgeon calling for
a Scottish Environment Act to protect Scotland’s nature
and ensure Brexit doesn’t roll back crucial environmental
protections.
The calls come at a time of renewed focus on
environmental issues, with the Scottish Government
committing to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions
by 2045, reversing plans to cut air passenger duty and
announcing a deposit return system for drinks containers.
But campaigners fear that with 80% of Scotland’s
environmental protections stemming from EU membership,
Brexit could unravel much of the legislation that helps us
safeguard our wildlife and take action to tackle problems like
air pollution. This could be detrimental at a time when our
environment is in crisis, in Scotland and across the globe.
A Scottish Government consultation seeking views on the
measures that will be required to ensure that environmental
standards are retained in the event of Brexit closed in May.

THE MOST REMOTE HOSTEL in
Wales – Ty’n Cornel hostel
in the Cambrian mountains
of mid-Wales – has achieved
its 10,000th overnight
stay since it was rescued
from closure by volunteers.
The prize for the 10,000th
overnight was awarded on
18th May to three cyclists –
Bryan Donoghue, Howard
Smith, and Damian Bevan –
by the warden Bill Hine.
Ty’n Cornel is a 16-bed
hostel situated at the
head of the Doethie valley.
The building is a former
farmhouse built around the
middle of the 19th Century.
The hostel has welcomed
walkers, cyclists, and other
visitors since 1967, and since
2007 it has been operated
entirely by volunteers
through Elenydd Wilderness
Hostels (EWH), a charitable
trust.
Ty’n Cornel hostel
managers Richard and Janet
Hollins said: “It’s always
gratifying to see visitors
enjoying their first stay at our
hostels – for many of them
it’s a whole new experience
to stay in such a beautiful,
remote location. We look
forward to welcoming many
more visitors to Ty’n Cornel!”
