HERITAGE PATHS
Over the last 10 years Scotways
(also known as the Scottish Rights of
Way Society) has identified, recorded
and detailed many Heritage Paths.
Other examples include:
The Tolmounth: Better known as
Jock’s Road, this 20km route runs
between Auchallater and Glen Doll.
It is named after John (Jock) Winter,
who is thought to have testified against
landowner Duncan McPherson when
he attempted to close the path in
the 1800s.
The Kirk Road: Historically this
5.25km route, which crosses the
Pentland Hills, provided easier access
for the residents of Bavelaw and
Loganlea who wanted to attend church
in Penicuik.
Dere Street: Extending from York to
the Forth, Dere Street was the main
Roman road into Scotland from AD78
to AD211. Today a 28km stretch runs
from the Cheviot Hills to Melrose.
