6 The Great Outdoors July 2019
CONTRIBUTORS & CONTACTS
Keith Fergus
Recent weeks have seen writer and
photographer Keith Fergus heading
across the Irish Sea to beautiful
County Down in Northern Ireland.
Keith has recently started work on
a guidebook to the region and this
enjoyed a couple of marvellous walks
into the mighty Mourne Mountains
as well as exploring the gorgeous
coast around Newcastle. Keith has
also managed to squeeze in a couple
of trips to the Cairngorms – his
favourite area for walking, and the
location for Keith’s feature in this
month’s issue, describing a walk
through the Lairig an Laoigh.

Chiara Bullen
This month, our Editorial Assistant
Chiara Bullen spent some time in
the Tyrolean mountains surrounding
Innsbruck, trying out a new hiking
tour from ASI Reisen and Innsbruck
Tourism. She’ll be writing about this
experience later this summer. When
she wasn’t trekking through the
summer snow and sampling Austria’s
finest kaiserschmarrn she put
together a list of her favourite myth-
ical walks in the UK ,which you can
find on pages 18-19. Chiara has also
been testing gear on the sunny slopes
of Ben Lomond. Look out for her gear
reviews online.
Judy Armstrong
The Great Outdoors women’s gear
editor and feature writer Judy
Armstrong spent the early weeks of
summer in Assynt, in the north-west
of Scotland on a ‘boots and boats’
adventure. With the campervan, sea
kayaks and hiking kit, she explored
the Summer Isles, and the islands and
coastline of the north. A highlight
was paddling Loch Glencoul, to hike
to Eas a’ Chual Aluinn – Britain’s
highest single-drop waterfall – and
camp on the loch shore. Turn to page
78 to read Judy’s vedict on seven
lightweight long-sleeved summer
base layers for women.
David Lintern
After some busy months on the Save
Glen Etive campaign earlier in the
year, David Lintern has been putting
the final touches to his first book (see
his feature on p46) and beginning
on routes for the second: an off-the-
beaten-track backpacking book with
two other authors. He’s just returned
from a big ridge circuit between Lochs
Affric and Mullardoch, prior to which
he was exploring rooty and disused
stalkers’ paths above Glen Feshie. “It’s
been engaging to think about routes
that aren’t just ambitious and unusual
mountain rounds but might also tell a
natural or cultural heritage story.”
