Walking on Guernsey is tipped as a year-round
activity by the Tasty Walks guide, but if you find
yourself thwarted by bad weather, there are plenty
of other ways to spend a few hours on the island.

ESSENTIAL
INFORMATION

WET WEATHER ALTERNATIVES

Maps: The States of
Guernsey map of
the Bailiwick is an
Ordnance Survey style
map with Guernsey at
1:15,000 on the front and
Alderney, Sark & Herm at
1:10,000 on the reverse.
It also has a town plan of
St Peter Port at 1:3000.

Getting there: Condor Ferries operate daily
between Poole and Guernsey. Check the
website (condorferries.co.uk) for up-to-date
sailing times. The journey should take just over
three hours but sometimes subject to delays
owing to weather conditions.

Getting around : The island has a wonderfully
efficient bus service (buses.gg) covering pretty
much all the locations you could want to visit.
Routes 91 and 92 encircle the island and are
easy to reach from the round island walking
route, should you need to use it to complete your
journey.

Tasty Walks: A wide range of routes is included
in the self-guided Tasty Walks programme, each
one supported by an audio guide, voiced by TV
personality James Strawbridge, a full audio
transcript and interactive map that highlights
all the points of interest along the way. We
combined walks 3 and 4.

For background on the wartime relics and to
hear what island life was like under German
occupation, the Occupation Museum and
the Guernsey Underground Hospital are good
places to start.

Victor Hugo’s House in St. Peter Port has been
extensively refurbished and was re-opened
this spring. The writer and poet was exiled here
after falling out with Napoleon and built this
extraordinarily eccentric four-storeyed home
overlooking the water.

The Little Chapel, modelled on the Rosary
Basillica at Lourdes and made from hundreds
and thousands of tiny pieces of broken ceramic,
is a couple of miles out of St Peter Port in Les
Vauxbelets valley. It’s was conceived and built
in 1914 by Brother Deodat and is reportedly
the smallest functioning chapel in Europe.

For a grand overview of the island’s history,
the Tapestry Museum is an ideal place to start.
Each panel depicts stories from a century
of the last millennium and the audio guide
picks out all the important details. If you
want to know more about the Pouquelaïe
(fairies) Varou (wereworlf), Lé Haptalaön
(hobgoblin), Désorchéleur (male white witch)
Désorcheul’raesse (female white witch) and
the deeply embedded folklore of the island, The
Guernsey Museum at Candie (pictured) has an
insightful display.
