RORY’S 5 BEST TIPS

FEEL AN ONLINE DELIVERY POSITION
To help you get a better understanding of what this on-plane attack looks and
feels like, we are going to work with the trail hand and arm only.

TRAIN
RORY’S MOVE

FEEL ‘STEEP’
Now make the same slow-motion move from
the top, but this time allow the clubhead to
move outwards, well forwards of the handle, as
shown. Again, feel how this sets head and
handle on different paths and how the club
feels ‘heavy’. Again, as those paths diverge, the
club wants to attack the ball across the ball
target line – this time out-to-in as indicated by
the clubshaft’s line.

FEEL ‘FLAT’
Swing to the top, using just your trail arm

  • right for right-handers. Now bring the club
down slowly from the top, flattening the shaft
to allow the head to drop well behind your
hands. You can see how the head and handle
move through different spaces to create an
unbalanced position that would lead to an in-
to-out attack in the direction of the clubshaft.

FIND THE MIDDLE GROUND
When your perception of these two extremes
grows, you will find it easier to hit Rory’s
balanced middle ground. A great mental image
is to picture your hands blazing a trail through
the air that the following clubhead moves
through. The better you can do this, the more
online your delivery will become and the more
consistently accurate your iron shots will be.

ARM/SHAFT
MATCH
As a further guide,
check the relationship
between your lead
arm and the clubshaft
through the delivery
zone. Note that on
those excessively flat
and steep deliveries,
they were very much
at odds with each
other. In this middle-
ground delivery they
are much more
aligned. When you
swing through this
position, the club feels
much lighter and
more powerful.
