Rory’s key
Use of the sole

CHIPPING

e hardly ever see Rory miss-
strike a chip shot, and the
reason for this is his ability
to use the bounce on the sole of his wedges.
All wedges are designed with the trailing
edge of the sole a little lower than the
leading edge. This design, termed bounce,
helps stop the sharp leading edge dig into
the ground and stall the head. But bounce
can only take effect when the club is
delivered on a shallow-to-level attack
angle. Rory achieves this by setting a club
position and angle at address that would
allow the bounce to work, and then simply
maintaining it through this short swing.

W

I picture the V formed
by my arms... then
turned into more a
Y-shape with the club. I
try to keep that shape
intact through the
swing, and just clip it off
the turf with no divot.

SAYS

RORY’S TP5 BALL
Adrian says: “No tour player
turns down extra
performance as long as it
comes with no drawbacks.
Going from the 2017 to
2019 TP5, Rory gained
between 1.5mph-2mph of
ball speed. He switched
from TP5x to TP5 last year
because he wanted a bit
more shot shaping
capability, which comes
from adding a little extra
spin. When he has a little
more spin, he can control
that spin and take it off
shots if he needs to. For
Rory to play to his strengths
he’s got to be able to hit all
the shots, and the extra spin
from the TP5 – particularly
in the mid and long irons –
helps him do that, whereas
TP5x was higher launching
and lower spinning.”
