RORY’S 5 BEST TIPS

USE YOUR CORE TO KEEP IT SIMPLE AND SHALLOW
Maintaining an effective club position through impact is all about keeping hand
and wrist action to a minimum and simply using your chest to turn back and
through. Follow these keys.

RORY’S MOVE

ADDRESS:
SET THE BOUNCE
To build this simple action
into your chipping game,
focus on your set-up.
Position the ball centrally in
a narrow stance, and place
the club behind the ball with
your trail hand only. Check
you are using only the
clubmaker’s shaft lean, the
back of the hand over the
top of the ball. This
promotes a down-to-level
attack angle.

BACKSWING:
CENTRAL
CONTROL
To preserve that shaft angle,
you need to synchronise
your hand, arm and body
motion. Like Rory, allow a
small rotation of your upper
body to move the club back,
with hands and arms
completely passive. Hold
your trail elbow with your
lead hand to help suppress
any tendency to manipulate
the club excessively with
your arms.

DOWNSWING :
TURN THROUGH
One of the striking things
about Rory’s chipping is
how, even on short shots, his
chest turns through to face
the target. This shows just
how dominant his torso is in
controlling his chipping
action; the body turns and
the hands and arms go
along for the ride. That’s
how he maintains and
delivers those set-up angles
through the ball... ensuring
the bounce allows the club
to slide through.

NO TRACE
You can always tell a good
chipper because when they
leave the practice area, they
leave no trace of having
been there. So as you work
on your chipping, pay
attention to your impact
marks. If you are making
any, you are too steep;
remember, the sole only
needs to brush the grass
and the club slides through
the ball.
