BALL TRACKER
As you work on this drill, watch the roll of the ball
as much as possible. When you get it right, the ball
will appear to hug the turf right off the blade. Once
you can generate this roll consistently, remove the
pencil, make the same stroke and look for the
same roll.

RORY’S 5 BEST TIPS

LEAD ROLL
From here, simply strike
putts. All you are looking
to achieve is a clean,
centred strike on the ball
while avoiding the pencil.
The only way to achieve
this is through an
ascending attack angle.

SET UP TO CONTROL
FACE LOF T
Key to Rory’s ability to create a pure
roll of the ball – and yours – is control
of face loft. If you deliver too many
degrees into the back of the ball you
will create skid. So use your address
position to promote the correct,
limited face loft; play the ball forward
of centre in your stance, but add
some forward shaft lean – hands
ahead of the blade – to deloft your
putter. Maintain this through to impact

  • with that rising strike angle – and
you will deliver the ideal launch
conditions for a quick, smooth roll.

PENCIL SHARPENER
Place the pencil on the grass, lined up
against the blade of the putter. Address the
ball normally, taking care to ensure a forward
ball position and forward shaft lean.

LOW-TO-HIGH STRIKE
While centre-of-gravity striking and topspin creation may sound complicated and technical,
training it could not be simpler. All you need is a pencil.

LIMITED LOFT, RISING ATTACK
To create Rory’s smooth roll, focus on setting the shaft angle at
address, and use a simple drill to encourage the ideal upward strike.
