slowly creating what I think
is a nice blotchy look, with
the Light Blue and J.N. Grey
merging quite nicely.
Now I turned to the
upper surface’s green finish,
where I wanted to create a
faded look. I began with
a base coat of Tamiya
XF-67 NATO Green before
applying light squiggles
of XF-4 Yellow Green
to the ribs. Again I tried
to keep this as random as
possible, keeping a few areas

thicker while making other spots
faded. On the wing ribs, I painted
thin lines of XF-49 Khaki, followed
by painting the entire model
XF-65 Field Grey, which I painted
on lightly, slowly building up the
colours to blend them all together.
I now gloss-coated the entire
model in preparation for the decals.
In my previous Wingnut Wings
build I didn’t have any troubles with
the decals, and these are just as
nice, but the bigger ones do need a
bit more work. For example, the red
stars on the upper and lower wings

needed some effort to properly
conform to the surface detail. I had
to use a sewing needle to stab small
holes into the decal before applying
a small amount of Wathers Solvaset.
Once they had settled down
I was very impressed with the
quality and look of the decals.
Another gloss coat was now applied
to seal and protect the decals
before I applied some washes.
I sat and stared at my R-1,
pondering what it needed in the
way of weathering. I started by
