Model Maker Decals

N

ow for something
a little bit
different after
a number of sheets
devoted to modern
aircraft model Maker
are now turning to the
aircraft of the Polish
Pilots who flew with
the Royal Air Force
during the Second
World War. This month
we have sheets for the
P-51D’s used by 303
Squadron between
1945 and 1946 when the
unit was disbanded.
Most of the Mustangs
are in natural metal
finish though two carry
standard RAF camouflage
and most carry the
Polish National insignia
on the nose and the 303
squadron badge under the cockpit.
Decal s are produced in 1/72 and
1/48 but in 1/32 scale the sheet only
supplies stencils and the smaller
coloured items like the Polish
Checkerboard, squadron badge and
propeller manufacturers logos.
The individual aircraft markings
and RAF roundels are all supplied
as pre cut frisk film masks.

CONCLUSION
Though the masks may
not be to everyone’s
taste in 1/32 scale you
can certainly get a very
realistic result though
it takes a little practice.
But whatever your scale
this is a fitting tribute to
the Polish Airman who
fought for the Allies.
Our thanks to
Model Maker Decals for
supplying these decals
for review. You can see
the full range at http://www.
ModelMaker.com.pl, and
most of the Model Maker
range is now being stocked
by Hannants in the UK.

Pacific Monograph

T

his is the first decal sheet
I have seen from this
Hawaiian company. and
I am quite impressed by their
choice of subjects. The Ford JB-2
was also called the KGW or LTV
N-2 Loon. No matter the name,
they were all reverse-engineered
V-1 missiles that were developed
in 1944, with over 1300 examples
being used by the United States
Army, Nav y and Air Force.
The type was ground- and
air-launched, just like its German
predecessor. Two submarines,
USS Cusk and Carbonero,
were also modified to launch
the type from watertight
containers on their upper hull.
The decals supply markings for
nine Loons in a wide range of colour
schemes, from a simple overall drab
green with a red front to the pulse-
engined JB-2s (something that is
common on most of the options),
as well as an overall white example
with a red nose. We also have
Navy-operated Loons in yellow
and orange, most of which carry
a selection of unique markings
The instructions supply side
profiles but do not recommend a
kit, although to be accurate the only
option is the MPM Ford JB-2, which
can still be found despite being
released over ten years ago. You
could also convert any V-1 to a JB-2 or
Loon by creating a new front pylon
with a straight leading edge, rather
than the angled version of the V-1.

1/48 SCALE

  • V-1/Ford JB-2, unpainted metal with a
red cross on nose indicating a Trialen
warhead. This example has a number
of stencils in German, so may actually
    be a V-1.

  • Ford JB-2, Japanese Sandman, olive drab
overall with white fuselage band, red or
white nose cap, red nacelle front.

  • Ford JB-2, white overall with red nose cap
    and rudder.

  • Ford JB-2; white 64, red nacelle front.

  • Loon, yellow overall with olive drab
nacelle, black and white rudder and
elevators, plus two black bands running
    around the fuselage.

  • Loon, black 1013, overall yellow red
nacelle cap with natural metal tailpipe.
    Black and white striped rudders.

  • Loon, overall yellow with red lightning
bolt on the forward fuselage, red nacelle
cap with olive drab tail pipe. Black and
    white striped rudders.

  • Loon, black 526, overall orange with red
    nose.

CONCLUSION
This is a nice sheet, although on
our sample the white was missing
from the national insignia, this
was not a major issue as I have
a Funkdecal sheet that supplies
replacements of the right size.
