Hanomag SS-100

Tamiya 1/48 Hanomag SS-100

MANUFACTURER: Tam i ya
SCALE: 1/48
KIT TYPE: Plastic injection moulding
KIT NUMBER: Tamiya 32593

T

he Hanomag SS-100 was
a veritable workhorse for
German forces during
WWII. Powered by a 100 hp 8,553 cc
diesel, it was based upon a civilian
vehicle design and could pull loads
of up to 20 tons. The SS-100 was
used frequently by the Luftwaffe
for towing larger aircraft, as
well as airfield defences such as
88mm anti-aircraft guns. They
were also used to tow elements
of the V2 rocket system
They were a frequent sight on
WWII German airfields and so
have a place in any appropriate
airfield diorama. For the avid
modeller, there is huge potential
with this little vehicle.

THE KIT
The new Tamiya kit is the same
dull yellow plastic used on most of
their armour models, and consists
of four sprues with 80 parts, with
one clear sprue for windows.
The instructions are clear
and precise, and easy to follow.
Tamiya offers 4 decal options

  • Yellow/green camouflage
    Luftwaffe version.

  • Overall grey Luftwaffe version.

  • Overall grey Army.

  • Overall grey Navy.

Reference photos are not as
common as you would think,
though I have found shots of
one towing a Ju. 88 from the two
bars attached to its tail wheel

As you would expect from
Tamiya, the detailing and moulding
is superb. The included driver
figure is very well detailed, and
can be posed with one hand on the
steering wheel, a feature that is
not as common as it should be.

CONSTRUCTION
Everything goes together simply
and without issue. The chassis
is basic with a hint of the base
of the engine. To which you add
the wheels, which are moulded
in plastic rather than vinyl.
The cabin is primarily one
piece, without any provision to
open the doors or engine cover
without significant surgery. Tamiya
instructs you to add to add the rear
of the cab to the main and then
“bend” the rear seats to fit them
into the cab. However, it is much
easier and more logical to add the
rear cab section after the seats are
in place. This helps greatly with the
painting as well as does the fact that
the window glazing can also be left
off until after the end of painting.
Tamiya instructions for the
interior colours are a bit sparse,
but to be fair, you cannot see inside
when everything is buttoned up.
