(Barré) #1
final aircraft, just that it would
be Jasta 19, as I loved the options
there. Basically, these were a fairly
standard olive-streaked finish with
a white nose cowling, yellow and
black tails, and a personal twist for
each individual pilot. The markings
were going to be masked and
sprayed so I knew it wasn’t going to
be one of the super fancy schemes.
The kit does have state of the
art decals from Cartograf, thanks
to Revell’s re-issuing of the kit in
recent years. However, I wanted
to have a different model from
everyone else’s and thought that
masking and airbrushing should
be a viable option here. So having
finally decided on an individual
aircraft – with a snake-like white
streak along the fuselage – I
proceeded to work on the markings.
I had some leftover ready-cut

Iron Cross vinyl masks from a
previous build and these were
employed on the tail and lower
wings to good effect. In the end,
however, I used the kit decals for
the top wing crosses and can report
that they performed excellently.
It was now time to fit the main
components together. One thing
I had heard on the grapevine was
about the kit struts. I’d seen pictures
of completed models with the struts
slightly out of line with the top and
bottom strut (when viewed from
side on), but I thought that mine
seemed to be ok, so I left them
(yet in the final pictures I can see,
annoyingly, that mine weren’t quite
as in line as I’d thought – so maybe
something to address if you opt
to build one). But that aside the fit
was again excellent and everything
clicked together faultlessly.

RIGGING
Did I mention it came with
rigging? The fat, hairy thread was
apparently for this purpose, and not
for my buttons. My advice would
be to replace this, but that said,
Revell had put some thought into
this and it’s quite cleverly woven
into the build, with instructions and
suitable holes for the threading of
said material. It would be perfectly
acceptable to use this method
except for replacing the thread
with something more refined.
My preferred option was
some Albion fine metal rod, as I
thought that my usual method
of monofilament wouldn’t quite
cut it in this scale. The rod looks
just about right and to scale for
this larger model. Mercifully,
(depending on your viewpoint) the
rigging is sparse on the Tripe, so
whichever method you decide to
employ, there isn’t too much to do.
Finally, all that was left was
to attach the engine, the cowling,
and the machine guns in place.
The cowling is reported to be
overly thick and I believe a resin
replacement is available. But to be
honest, I thought the kit part really
looked ok, and with some judicious
sanding of the edges to thin it
down it really looked the part.
The machine gun replacements
were the standard rolled photo
etch jackets, but I elected to use
the kit body and amalgamate
the parts. Some care is required
here; finding a suitably sized rod
to roll them around is key to a

successful outcome. They looked
very good in the end and light
years away from the kit barrels.
This left the Wingnuts DFW
C.V propeller from my scrap box. I
started by painting the laminations
on to the blades in fairly stark
colours (any lightish two-tone
sand/brown acrylic colour will
suffice), then created the wood
effect by an overall application of
brown oil paint dragged along the
length of the blade. For this model,
I went with a fairly dark brown
shade to match the dark appearance
seen in my references. Left for a
few days to fully dry I added the
propeller to finish my model

CONCLUSIONS
This kit was, surprisingly, great fun
and a pleasure to build. I wasn’t
expecting to be saying that at the
end, but it really was. Once the
extras like the machine guns and
propellor and figures were stripped
away (and the bright red plastic
covered up), the underlying kit
was really excellent and belied its
sixty years – quite incredibly so.
The fit was bizarrely good for
a kit of this age, and the surface
textures and detail were excellent.
I was surprised at the difference
between the quality of the major
components and the poor additional
items and detail, something I can’t
explain. But as luck would have it,
these were easily fixed. Even the
cockpit, although sparse, was easy to
transform with a little imagination.
I certainly had as much fun
with this as with a Tamiya or
Wingnuts from the 21st century –
in fact probably more fun, as the
transformation was all the more
satisfying. I also think the end result
doesn’t look out of place alongside
these modern ”super kits”. I don’t
know if the same could be said of the
other Revell offerings in this range,
but I wouldn’t be averse to finding
out. For £12 what’s to lose? That’s
probably as much as I’d normally
spend on an aftermarket set.
As our American friends
would say – go figure...
