fettling = adjusting the fit by
cutting or sanding) or filler.

BMW’S BEST
The BMW 801 14-cylinder radial
engine builds up out of no fewer
than 15 components. I painted it
with Tamiya paints (which I used
extensively on this model) with a
mixture of X-11 Chrome Silver and
X-10 Gunmetal, followed up with
a grey oil wash. Details were then
picked out in bronze, red, and grey,
and the result is a model in itself.
Such a shame that I now
went on to cover it up!
I’ll know it’s in there though,
tucked up in its cowling (as indeed
will you) but I don’t tend to expose
engines unless they stick out
naturally, if you see what I mean.

A HINT OF MOTTLING,
(AND AN UNEXPECTED
ASYMMETRY)
Having tacked all the cowling
panels into place I began with my
usual coat of Tamiya Fine Surface
Primer. This gives a fantastically
smooth surface for painting as
well as highlighting any areas
that might still need attention.
