A

N OPTIONALLY MANNED version
of the North American F-86 Sabre
dates back to 1973, when the
US Navy debuted the QF-86H,
which was used as a pilotless
drone for full-scale aerial target
requirements. The then Naval Weapons Center
China Lake, California, and Naval Air Systems
Command also converted a batch of former
Japan Air Self-Defense Force F-86Fs for use as
targets. The aircraft were lown by the Paciic
Missile Test Center (PMTC) at Point Mugu,
California, for air-to-air missile testing over the
nearby ranges before being replaced by QF-4
Phantoms in the 1990s.
