  • I am grateful to several people for help with this table, notably N. Newton-Fisher, M. Emery Thompson, Sean
and Catherine O’Hara, Lucy Bates and Crystal Davis. Where actual or putative kinship has been used to estimate
ages of older individuals, consideration has been based on the age categories specified in Table 2.4. For adult
females, a minimum age is given, assuming the oldest infant is the first-born and was born when the female was
15 years old, except where other information indicates to the contrary. The accuracy of the D.o.B. in these cases
is notbut. In other cases, accuracy of D.o.B. is .

B Sonso chimpanzees: plant food species

The main source of our data on the foods eaten by the Sonso chimpanzees are the records of foods seen
eaten by our field assistants and students in the course of their daily observations. From the start of the
BFP we have collected samples of food species and many of these have been photographed fresh for our
Plant Identification Album, and subsequently dried and mounted by Andy Plumptre for the BFP’s
herbarium at Sonso camp. In cases where the identification was uncertain they were identified at
Makerere University’s herbarium, mostly by A.B. (Tony) Katende and then returned to the Sonso
herbarium.
In 1997 Rhiannon Meredith and Susie Whiten made a list of 76 species of plants providing food for
the Sonso chimpanzees. These records are based on observational data and do not imply anything about
seasonality of the plant species, nor that chimpanzees do not eat certain species at times left blank on
the table; they have simply not so far been observed eating them in these months.
