Chimpanzees of the Budongo Forest : Ecology, Behaviour, and Conservation

(Tina Sui) #1

She was hung from a tree in the forest, which was determined to be the coolest place in order to reduce
the effects of decomposition.

External findings

The chimpanzee is a sexually inactive female in an emaciated condition. There are many bruises due to
safari ant attack on the ventral aspects of the head, neck, chest and groin. Rigor mortis is not yet apparent.
There is external autolysis, which is not extensive. The teeth are present and in good condition except
for normal wear of the tabular surfaces.

Body condition

Hydration: very dehydrated.
Fat Stores: no fat stores.
Muscle Mass: emaciated.

Internal findings

The ventral skin is strongly adherent to the adnexa because of lack of subcutaneous fat.
There are multiple fibrous adhesions from the mesentery and omentum to the ventral cadaver wall.
Viscera are entrapped in the adhesions. There is a 2 cm diameter abscess in the left lateral cadaver
wall. Abdominal muscle surrounding the navel contains pockets of yellow-orange pus and caseous
material. There is an irregular consolidated swelling in the dorsal aspect of the spleen.
Both the right and left diaphragmatic lung lobes have bullous emphysema extending to the cardiac
lobes. There is bilateral atelectasis in the ventral lung lobes. The parenchyma of the lung contains small
dark spots. The trachea contains small quantities of inhaled soil.
There is a focal pericardial adhesion to the left ventricle. The right side of the heart appears flabby
and the chordae tendinae appear weakened. There are multiple hepatic lymph node abscesses and
multiple focal calcified abscesses in the parenchyma of the ventral liver lobe, which contain caseated
material. In addition, there are several 3–4 cm diameter abscesses with thickly fibrous capsules con-
taining creamy pus in the dorsal parenchyma. Focal telangectasia can be seen in the diaphragmatic lobe.
There is a considerable amount of ingesta throughout the entire alimentary tract. She had a good
appetite until the last 24 hours.
A large 40 cm long taenia-like tapeworm is seen in the duodenum. There are focal petechial haemor-
rhages in the stomach mucosa. Many 2 cm long nematodes with dark anterior portions were seen in the
jejunum. Many 2 cm long white nematodes were seen in the caecum associated with haemorrhagic
ulcers. Nematodes are attached to the centre of the ulcer in places. There are multiple haemorrhagic
spots and ulcers on the mucosa of the colon and caecum. Diffuse congestion is seen throughout
the colon. There are multiple 5 mm diameter nodules in the caecal wall which are associated with
nematodes which extend from the nodular surface. There is a 2 cm diameter abscess on the serosal
surface of the mid colon.
All other tissues appear normal. The brain and spinal cord were removed and examined.
