from the parent tree. Plumptre (1995) has shown that parent trees of Khayaneed to have
attained a dbh (diameter at breast height) of 80 cm before maximum seed production
takes place. It would thus introduce a long delay in mahogany regeneration if an exces-
sive number of large trees was removed and this is exactly what happened in the 1990s.
We do not yet know how long it will be before Budongo recovers a population of mature
mahogany trees.
