There are four major types of qualitative research: phenomenology, grounded theory,
ethnography, and historical. Each of these types of research has distinguishing
characteristics, so it is important for a researcher to select a method appropri-
ate to the question. Table 9-1 provides a comparison of these four major types.

Phenomenological Research:
Studying the Lived Experience
Phenomenology is the method used when one wishes to study lived experience.
The general question being asked is, “What is the meaning of. . .?” The goal is to
achieve understanding of an experience from the perspective of the participants.
