for making a clear case that CNS competencies are unique, built on clinical expertise
and specialization, and directly connected to the science of nursing. Future opportuni-
ties for CNSs and their stakeholders will likely be positively energized by new possi-
bilities provided in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, and new curricular
designs of both practice and research doctoral programs.
