154 ■ II: ROLES FOR DOCTORAL ADVANCED NURSING PRACTICE

  1. Should NPs and MDs take the same certification exams? What are the advantages and
drawbacks of this approach to determining competencies?

  2. Are the AACN’s Essentials relevant and futuristic enough to provide guidance in the de-
velopment of the practitioner going forward? Should an essentials document be futuristic?

  3. Should ethics be added as an essential? Discuss ways to incorporate ethics appropriately
    throughout the curriculum.

  4. Should PhD and DNP students be educated together? Are there areas where each should be
educated separately? What areas should be shared?

  5. What level of rigor should exist in a DNP program? Should it be similar to the PhD
    program?
