166 ■ II: ROLES FOR DOCTORAL ADVANCED NURSING PRACTICE

Master’s Essentials

Doctorate of Nursing
Practice Essentials Key Differences

  1. Research prepares the
    graduate to: access relevant
    data needed to address
    questions, analyze outcomes
    and initiate change, understand
    statistics and research
    methods, write and
    communicate effectively

  2. Health care policy
    prepares graduates to: analyze
    policy results, articulate
    concerns to appropriate
    political officials regarding
    health care consumer
    advocacy; interpret
    to consumers
    5. Health care policy for
    advocacy in health care
    prepares the graduate to:
    demonstrate leadership with
    the development of health
    care polices, critically
    analyze policies with
    consideration of consumers,
    providers, and other
    disciplines, and lead
    implementation of policy

    • MSN graduate will analyze
      policy results while the DNP
      graduate will develop health
      care policy and analyze results

    • Stronger focus on DNP
      essentials for systems-wide
      thinking and approach

    • MSN essentials focus on
      population specific focus
      approach as opposed to
      population based (large
      complex data set) with DNP

    • The DNP graduate is leading
      the change in most regards
      while the MSN graduate
      assists with leading the
      change (may initiate/catalyze,
      but not lead the change
      for policy development)

    1. Scientific underpinning
      for practice prepares the
      graduate to: integrate nursing
      science from all sciences/
      disciplines, use science to
      determine significance of
      health/health care delivery
      system, and evaluate
      outcomes

    2. Clinical scholarship/
      analytical methods for EBP
      prepares the graduate to: use
      analytical methods to critically
      evaluate existing literature and
      other evidence relevant to
      practice, use technology
      research methods to identify
      gaps in research, and to
      disseminate research findings
      to improve practice of other
      providers

      • Macroscopic base with
        DNP essentials expanded to
        include all sciences to impact
care at the highest level of
        nursing care

      • Population-based problem
        solving to impact health and
        health care system overall

      • DNP prepares students to
        evaluate large, complex data
        sets and recognize/interpret
        patterns

      • DNP prepares students to
        identify best practices and
        incorporate these practices
        into the clinical setting
        (translational research focus)

      • DNP graduate will
        disseminate findings of
        research to improve both
        practice and care delivery
        system
