■ CERTIFICATION FOR NURSE EDUCATORS
The NLN has sponsored a certification examination for nurse educators since 2005 (NLN,
2014). Certification is an expectation and/ or requirement of many RN and advanced
practice registered nursing (APRN) roles. Unfortunately, the certified nurse educator
(CNE) certification is not mandated to practice nursing education, but such credentials
should be a strong consideration for hiring, promoting, and retaining nurse educators.
The eligibility for the CNE examination has changed since the last writing of this
chapter. The past eligibility criteria included having nine credits or semester hours in
