library, an overview of resources and services available, and in- depth database search-
ing. Specific skills that must be developed and maintained include:



  1. Use of keyword searching, truncation/ wildcard symbols, subject head-
    ing searching, Boolean logic, the use of limits (including clinical queries) in
    databases such as Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature
    (CINAHL), LexisNexis, and Education Resources Information Center (ERIC)

  2. Creation and maintenance of personal accounts within various databases to
    facilitate the retention of search strategies, citation information, and establish-
    ing alerts for frequently searched topics

  3. Use of the various publication styles such as APA or AMA for in- text citation
    style and references in writing for publication

  4. Use of bibliographic management tools such as EndNote, described earlier in
    this chapter, to assist in organizing and managing writings

  5. Ability to locate evidence- based practice information using “Clinical Queries”
    in various databases such as PubMed/ MEDLINE, the Cochrane Library, the
    National Guidelines Clearinghouse (NGC), and the TRIP Database (Turning
    Research into Practice)
    In one example of a DNP orientation, a 3- hour workshop lead by the students’
    primary library liaison introduces them to the topics listed earlier. The doctoral stu-
    dents also have a 3- hour technology update workshop during their subsequent summer
