canthaSalm-Dyck, orO. streptacanthaLem. (Dressler 1953). This is
callednochtliandtlatoc nochtli/tla-toc-n ̄ ochtli ̄ in the Codex Cruz-
Badianus (Emmart 1940; Dressler 1953; Cruz and Badiano 1991; Gates
2000; Zepeda and White 2008; Clayton et al. 2009; deAvila Blomberg ́
2012). Today,Opuntia ficus-indicais widely cultivated but apparently
native to central Mexico.Nopalea cochenillifera (L.) Salm-Dyck is
also widely cultivated for the insect that is the source for cochineal
(Standley 1920–1926:863).
