S AIR FORCE engineers,
test pilots and Norwegian
government and
industry personnel have
completed a signi cant
test phase of the new
Kongsberg Joint Strike Missile that is
being developed for the Norwegian
armed forces.
The JSM is Norway’s advanced
anti-surface warfare missile, which is
designed to be carried in the F-35A’s
internal weapons bay. The missile can
be employed against sea- and land-
based targets.
Before proceeding with integration
testing on the F-35A, the JSM
has been tested at Edwards AFB,
California, on F-16s of the 416th Flight
Test Squadron (FLTS). Collin Drake,
416th FLTS JSM project engineer, said
JSM development work at Edwards
began in 2015 and that live-drop

testing veri ed the JSM’s ability to be
safely released from the aircraft and
perform its autonomous functions.
Testing included multiple
variants of the JSM that increased
in complexity and capability
throughout the course of the
program. The rst JSM was a glide-
only weapon without an engine,

progressing up to the nal ight test
events where it was powered and hit
a target on the Utah Test and Training
Range (UTTR) with full mission
systems software and guidance.
The next step is to integrate
the JSM onto the F-35, followed
by further weapons and
integration testing.
