DEPLOYED OPERATIONS

T

HE OPPORTUNITY TO join
US Air Force personnel
deployed to the Middle East
and to y on a mission during
Operation ‘Inherent Resolve’
supporting F-22 Raptors was
an incredible experience. Squadrons
that are on operations away from home
live for work. They put in long days and
are totally dedicated to their missions,
often functioning in extreme conditions
and for long periods of time.
It’s easy to see why some people
decide to dedicate their lives to military
service — it’s that feeling of pride that

they are contributing to their country.
However it comes at a price, namely
being away from home and family for
extended periods.
It also has an impact on readiness.
While the deployed squadrons are
focused on their immediate combat
role, it may represent only a fraction of
their overall mission sets. Therefore, a
balance of time on the road and time
back at home plate is a healthy model
for any air force, irrespective of its size
and how stretched budgets may be.
