types. Nevertheless, it is often the top
choice for new pilot graduates destined
for Air Mobility Command.
Most of the tuition on the Galaxy is
carried out at Lackland, where pilots
freshly assigned to the type receive
their initial quali cation training. As a
training comparison, at Travis the 22nd
AS typically has between eight and 10 co-
pilots going through aircraft commander
training at any one time.
Wangler explained, ‘After roughly
three-and-a-half months at Lackland,
pilots arrive at either Dover AFB or here
at Travis, where they continue training to
become certi ed to y within their speci c
squadron. Once at his or her duty station,
the process to become mission-quali ed
typically takes between four to eight
weeks, depending on the ying schedule
and what levels of additional training are
required for that particular pilot. Even
after attaining mission-ready status, pilots
still undergo ongoing training courses to
obtain additional quali cations in areas
such as tactics and aerial refueling.
‘In addition, we all have our own
currency items to accomplish at certain
time intervals throughout the year to
ensure that we don’t lose pro ciency in
any of a list of speci c ying maneuvers.

The C-5 family is quite small in

comparison to others in the air

force, so the opportunities to fl y it don’t

come around as often as many other types
